Excerpts from the press release

Museo Vivo tells perspectives and opportunities of a small diocesan museum. Over six months, during educational workshops activated in the school year 2012/2013, the Museum of Sacred Art of Tarquinia* (MAST) opened to the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students of primary and secondary schools in the city, offering its spaces and its collection, suggesting reading paths and encouraging autonomous imaginative interpretations. It was not a one way meeting: the ateliers, the disorganized, though never trivial remarks made by the boys, were an opportunity to rethink more generally to the relationship between the museum and its audience. Hence the idea of a publication that was not just the report of a worthy museum education initiative. The fifty pages of Museo Vivo, rather suggest a possible variation of the concept of cultural enjoyment, using the communicative power of the enchanted photographs by Antonio Ranesi.
The report of an experience, a catalog of photographs and an idea: Museo Vivo.

*Tarquinia is a small village not very far from Rome, in central Italy.

Behind the scenes: the boys, the paintings, the objective

The kids have cheerful and carefree faces. They are enjoying an unusual day, free from the imposition of school desks. When they arrive at the museum they are excited, exuberant like their age requires them to be. While I fix the lights I hear them laugh and joke, at times overwhelmed by the almost too forceful complaints of the teacher that's escorting them. She would like them to be quiet and tidy as if they were in class. Bu the kids seem to be only interested in the complex signals that run through the group's dynamics, seemingly oblivious of what surrounds them. I start having some doubts. I fear it will not be easy to stop them in front of the lens, that it will be impossible to convey my intentions, unlikely I manage to fix them in the picture as if they were part of it. Instead, as soon as I start to place them in front of the paintings, one by one and far from the curious eyes of their mates, they immediately change attitude. Almost without any need to be directed, I see them become absorbed by the atmosphere of the canvases, interact with the gazes of the portrayed characters, striking poses that are coherent with the context they belong to. Calm, serious, not at all agitated and almost without shame, they carry me to the distant worlds I want to portray them in.
It seems as if their relationship with the camera is spontaneous, immediate; immune to narcissism and to shame. They have grown under the perpetual gaze of electronic eyes, their presence given for granted. They do not know about a time when a lens could impress.
There is nothing left for me to do but set up the lights so that they go along with the ones created by the painters, to verify the composition and pick the right moment to take the photograph.
